MiMiSa Korean Restaurant Zurich

This restaurant / takeaway / food shop is located in a quiet neighbourhood and serves tasty Korean food. The prices are as usual for Zurich – not outrageous but still in the 60CHF+ range.

We had:

2 mains – Bibimbap & Spicy Beef Soup with rice

1  veggie pancake

2 drinks (4.50 each)

Total cost was about 65CHF

Husband and I would love to go again!

Review: Siam Kitchen (Nex)

Went to Nex Shopping Mall to eat dinner as I was too lazy to cook. My husband usually makes faces at me when I try to add chili to anything so I saw this as a great opportunity to order a chili dish. More for me to eat too since he doesn’t like it! Hahhaa!

IMG_3217[1]
Ordered the Tom Yam with Rice Noodles. Isn’t it the first thing you think of when you hear “Thai food”? It looks fiery and smelt ok.

After taking a bite I was a little disappointed. It wasn’t spicy enough for me :(. The soup was tasty for the first sip or two then it mysteriously started to taste flat. The spiciness had disappeared and all I could taste was some sourness and maybe a hint of chili oil.

Then again, my tastebuds have probably been burnt beyond repair by my mother’s cooking. I grew up with extreme chili training. Heh. My mum included a lot of chili padi in her dishes. It’s also known as Bird’s Eye chili, I think. Used to be the hottest on earth until people discovered new chili plants.
Anyway, the restaurant was ok. Ample space and wasn’t too noisy. Cutlery and tabletops were clean enough and the air-conditioning wasn’t too cold.
The food. Well. I expected more. The dishes we had were just ok and nothing fantastic. About the same as food court Thai food.

Someone once told me that if you want Thai food, go to a restaurant that’s run by real Thais. According to that piece of intel, real places have pictures of the King and Queen of Thailand proudly displayed on a wall and will usually play popular Thai songs.

Overall?

I don’t think I’ll go back again.

Funny: Un. un. un. un. unbelievable! Asian 70s style song.

I cracked up and couldn’t stop laughing for 2 whole minutes while watching this! I really thought his hair was going to fall off at one point.

The video was shot in East Coast Park in Singapore for an episode of a local drama. I think the title of the show is “Spouse for House”. Ah, the cheesy-ness, corny-ness and lyrics combined! I have a tummy ache now because I CAN’T STOP WATCHING!

Cooking: Indian Curry

IMG_3221[1]

Gaze upon it’s spicy glory! I’m drooling just looking at this picture. I cheated in making this though 😀

1) Get Indian curry paste (this is the cheat) from NTUC Fairprice (about $2)

2) Marinate 300~400g of chicken overnight. I do this so the chicken is full of flavour when cooked. I pay about $5 for 400g of chicken breast/fillet.

3) Potatoes~! A full kilogram of fancy washed new potatoes in nice plastic packaging cost $2.50. I threw in about half a kilogram, boiled for 15 mins in salt then quartered them with the skin on. I hear most of the nutrients are in the skin, so I scrubbed the potatoes with a brush under water before boiling them.

4) Follow instructions TO A POINT. Customise whenever you feel it’s right.

5) Add the coconut milk (90 cents) as instructed. You don’t have to put in the exact amount though. Of course, be reasonable with the cutback – weak tasting curry is akin to watered down sludge. I exaggerate but curry-lovers may agree with me on this point.

I made this curry here have more KICK. How?

While the chicken was simmering, I tossed in a spoon-gouge of butter. When I added the coconut milk to the paste-chicken-potato mix and sampled it, I found it wasn’t spicy enough for my tastes. A healthy dollop of Korean chili paste remedied that. While putting the chili paste back into the fridge, the Chinese Oyster sauce caught my eye. Why not? One bottle bottom-whack in the pot for flavour.

Bubble bubble, toil and trouble… *cackle*

The curry turned out DELICIOUS~! It was enough for 4 and a half portions (I had it for two dinners with my husband and one meal for my lunch). This is very worth making if you don’t have a lot of time during the week. Cook something huge and it can last for up to 3 days.

Crusader’s Quest: Popo’s Shop

I am addicted to this game! It is the most engaging game I’ve played on the iPhone EVER! As such, I’m going to compile my findings and information on this game to help myself. For those reading this, feel free to use the information I’ve gathered. Link back to this post if you copy.

Popo is a travelling merchant whom you can buy all sorts of goods from at seemingly random prices.

DO NOT buy honor from Popo! You can earn it easily enough once you level up your 3 core heroes to 5-stars. Also, it’s not wise to buy weapons from her either. Fight the World Boss instead.

All the items she sells are random. She will only appear in town for 15 minutes after you have SUCCESSFULLY cleared a stage where you “rescue” her from the monsters around her.

IMG_3258[1]

If you have tons of gold and are too lazy to promote your 3-star heroes and hope for a lucky break, just wait until you see 4 star heroes in her shop. Using a gem to bargain with her will get you a 30% discount.

I have also seen 5-star weapons in her shop.

IMG_3260[1]

Plus a variety of heroes, which include event heroes like Lovely Chocolate the wizard.

IMG_3251[1]

Cadets you’d usually get in dungeons…

IMG_3259[1]IMG_3267[1]

Last but not least, the four-star heroes and ridiculously priced weapons, dungeon keys, bread and colosseum tickets.

Cooking: Pierogi z Jagodami (Blueberry dumplings)

My dear husband loves blueberry dumplings and always laments that he can only have them in Polish summer, when the berries are in season. As luck would have it, now that we live in sunny Singapore, blueberries are in regular supply. The supermarkets import fruits from all over the world so we have no lack of out-of-season fruits. Blueberries, peaches and strawberries look to be staples since I see them whenever I go to the nearby supermarket these days.

I tasted some when Maciej’s family visited and cooked some and it seemed simple enough to replicate, especially when I have this great cheating ingredient…

TA-DA!

IMG_3202[1]

Yes, pre-made dumpling skins! Ahahahaha! They cost $2 for a tray of about 50 skins and are freshly made in Singapore.

I bought blueberries and whipping cream too, bringing the cost to… about $11 in all. Not too bad. I started with 3 berries per dumpling but it looked a bit empty so I stuffed 5 into the later ones.

IMG_3203[1]

All ready to get boiled! (DO NOT fry fruity dumplings!) Cover with a damp cloth if you’re not going to boil them right away.

IMG_3205[1]

Wait till you can see the berries through the skin on both sides and take them out.

IMG_3206[1]

I tried whisking the whipping cream with sugar but it didn’t become thick cream like i expected – just a sweet milky soup. I drowned my dumplings in it anyway and yum! The blueberry juice was a little sour but it mixed well with the sweet “sauce” I made. It tasted like warm berry ice cream with chewy bits, only not as unhealthy.

Maciej was very happy to have pierogi z jagodami 😉 Seeing him take eager bites was very satisfying and fulfilling.

On my second attempt, I used evaporated milk and sprinkled sugar over it. Tasted pretty much the same -.-!… Maybe I’ll try sweetened condensed milk next and see how it turns out.

Crusader’s Quest: Heroes and where to get them and are they worth collecting?

Almost all the information can be found in-game in the Tome. It’s somewhere in the top left of the interface and is book-shaped.

Example: 3-Star Royal Guard in Forest 1-2 (Hard mode). He costs 5 energy per try and will yield 93 honor when sold.

If you are not a collector, SELL ALL ONE & TWO STAR HEROES to get honor after you maxed them out first time and finished claiming gems.

Keep your nails simple… or not.

I had a pedicure package at a nail salon in Pasir Ris so I decided to have my nails done there for my big day. I did some browsing online before I went and found a simple design I liked.

“Keep it simple, don’t go overboard”, I told myself.

Little good that did.

When I got to the nail salon, I discovered that I had lost the link to the webpage with the initial design I planned to have done.

Nooooo!

A quick search on my phone brought up another design and it was much more detailed than what I first wanted. However, it really was very very nice…

My next concern was whether the manicurist would be able to re-create it. She examined the design closely, then went and got out boxes of tiny crystals and nail decals, holding some pieces to my nails and planning what to use. We discussed the design and which pieces to use, and she got right to work.

After about two hours, my nails were done!

I must say that I was impressed that she could just look at a picture and reproduce it. She used quite a few tools and it was quite fascinating to see how she utilised them to create the effect intended.

I loved my nails and how pretty they looked! Look at the tiny bride and groom on my fingers, the detail, the fade from snow white to natural pink! (The pink part is clear varnish and my natural nail hue shows through.) I was really satisfied with the end result and could not wait to show it to Maciej. These pictures were taken on the train on my way home because I absolutely had to show him my beautiful nails.

I mean, LOOK. They are so gorgeous I am not sure if those were my hands I was looking at. Haha! For a person who takes next to zero care of them, that was the most pampering my digits had gotten in years.

For those interested, the nail salon is one of a many in a chain called Nail Palace.

What I did: Gelish manicure + 2 tone effect + design + one crystal + 3 crystal ribbons.

Total damage to wallet: $184

Hello to a Whole New World!

I have toyed with the idea of writing a life-blog for ages and decided to start writing about my experiences as a sort of “record for the ages”. What I thought, felt or experienced in my day-to-day life or what I feel should be shared.

Another reason was the thought that maybe I can keep in touch with people without talking. See, a lot of the time in modern society, people don’t actually talk face-to-face anymore. It’s easier to type, send texts and leave messages. Maybe writing is the way to go. I want my children / relatives / friends to know or at least be informed of the goings-on in my life though I rarely talk to them.

Why “The Polar Wife” ? Well… My dear husband’s a Pole. Having grown up in entirely different cultures and continents, the first thing I thought of was that we are polar opposites. It was not a big leap for me to come up with this wordpress domain.

As of my first post, 16th February 2015, I have gone through one of the greatest trials of adulthood. Marriage! Haha… The journey was not without hiccups though and there are sure to be further trials ahead.

Good luck, me.
